The discovery of this tool resulted in the sudden explosion of new
exploits which were discovered in late 1999 and 2000. In the period from
1997-1999 there were hardly any token related holes found in AOL. This
was mostly due to the lack of an Atomic Debugger and FDO compiler for the
new AOL 4.0/5.0 software. A version of VPD was released for 4.0 which
supported FDO but still without an Atomic Debugger it was impossible to
analyze the atom structure of the new generation of AOL client software.
The Star Tool was found in an AOL iqa website hacked by Glitch and YTC.
It was listed as a debugger for AOL 4.0 Canada. Once the installer,
cadebug2.exe, was hexed by O0O; it installed on any AOL client and then
the master.aol file was further hexed to prevent the tool from being
deleted by AOL when signing on. This particular Star tool features an
integrated Atomic Debugger and an FDO compiler.
