Fake accounts using unverified Credit Card/Checking #'s

Discovered By: Various
Date: Early 1990's
Patched: August 1995

Updated: 2.8.01

In the early 90's AOL did not verify billing information at sign up. As long as you had a good credit card generator and a valid prefix you were able to use non existing card#'s to make AOL accounts. These accounts usually lasted a week or two before AOL would verify the CC's existence. Same thing with checking account information. You could use any number and not have to call up AOL. This was fixed when AOL added on the fly verification to the New User process.

Update:
In the very early 90's you didn't even need a valid cc, you could type 0502030304930329 and it'd last just as long as a creditmaster account
