AOL4Free

Discovered By: Happy Hardcore
Date: Spring 1995
Patched: n/a

AOL4Free was actually a Mac program that modified the AOL client to send the free area token repeatedly and at different intervals. This was before AOL went flat rate and people were getting charged $3 an hour to be on AOL. Well, the free area token tricked AOL into thinking you were at keyword: Billing or something else and you never had to pay for the service. Tricks like this still exist today and are useful with foreign AOL accounts.

This program ended up getting Happy Hardcore arrested and charged with violating the Federal Computer Crimes act. His sentence was 6 months on house arrest, 2 years of probation and over $50,000 in restitution.
